Yes, the C509B and the C589B operate in 8-bit. It's on page 10-5 of the
datasheet, page 119 in the PDF.

I have a 3C509B -"C"  (C written in red marker by Bob Metcalfe himself) a
Combo-card with all three connectors (DB15, coax and RJ45) and a 3C509B-TPO
with only RJ45.
